Gidon Kremer Information
Gidon Kremer (February 27, 1947) is a Latvian classical violinist, founder of Kremerata Baltica, and an artistic director. He is from Riga, Latvian SSR, USSR, and his grandfather, Karl Brückner, was a famous musicologist and violinist in Riga. Kremer started playing the violin when he was only four. He received instruction from his father and his grandfather. He studied at the Riga School of Music and was taught by mainly Voldemar Sturestep (Voldemars Sturesteps). In 1965, Kremer studied with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory and won third placed at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels in 1967. Two years later, Kremer again won second place at the Montreal International Violin Competition, which was followed by a first-place prize at the Paganini Competition in Genoa. Back in 1970, Kremer won first place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
Kremer played his first concert in 1970, in the West, Vienna's Musikverein, where he played with Thomas Schippers as well as the Wiener Symphoniker. In 1975, he debuted in the Berlin Philharmonie and at the festival Bachwoche Ansbach in Germany. In London, he debuted under André Previn in 1976, which was followed by his appearances at the Salzburg Festival in 1976. He also appeared in Japan and New York City in 1977.
Kremer is the founder of the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra and director of the Musiksommer Gstaad festival (1996/97). He has performed with many famous artists such as George Enescu, Alban Berg, Dmitri Shostakovich, Victor Kissine, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Arthur Lourié, and many more.
Some of the notable honors and awards earned by Kremer include a Grammy Award nomination in 2015, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Istanbul Music Festival in 2010, Triumph Prize 2000 (Moscow), Officer of the Order of the Three Stars, and the list goes on.
