Gary Gene Watson (October 11, 1943) is an American country singer. Some of his hits from 1975, “Fourteen Carat Mind,” Love in the Hot Afternoon,” and his signature song from 1979 “Farewell Party” kept him unforgettable in every era. Watson was born in Palestine, Texas. In the 1960s, he began his career as a music artist. Watson used to perform in local clubs at night to pursue his musical career while he was also working in a Houston auto body shop during the daytime.
Watson recorded for a few small regional record labels. He had a regional hit, “Bad Water.” In 1974, he caught the attention of Capitol Records, who picked up his album “Love in the Hot Afternoon” and released it all across the United States. A mid-tempo title track ballad from the album was released in June 1975, which brought immediate success after reaching number three on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart.
Watson continued to be a famous artist throughout the late 1970s and 80s. He recorded several successful tracks that hit Billboard Top-40 hits. The recordings include “Farewell Party,” “Nothing Sure Looked Good on You,” “Should I Go Home (or Should I Go Crazy),” “Paper Rosie,” and “Where Love Begins.” Farewell Party quickly became Watson’s signature song after its release in 1979. He celebrated his 50th year in the music industry in February 2012 with the release of “Best of the Best, 25 Greatest Hits”. His studio albums include From the Heart (2001), Then & Now (2005), In a Perfect World (2007), Your Money and My Good Looks (2011), and several others.
