Gateways Music Festival Orchestra Information
Armenta Hummings Dumisani, a renowned classical concert pianist and educator established the Gateways Music Festival in 1993 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In 1995, when Dumisani accepted a position as an Associate Professor at the Eastman School of Music, the Festival moved to Rochester, New York. Gateways have thrived in the face of adversity that, to outsiders, seems impossible because of the solid groundwork it was built on in its early days as a grass-roots organization sustained mostly by the tireless efforts of volunteers.
The Festival has been going strong for nearly 30 years, and throughout that time, it has expanded the size of its Orchestra, the number of concerts it hosts, and the range of communities it welcomes. For six days, chamber music recitals, a full orchestra concert, a film series, professional development activities, open rehearsals, lectures, and panels are on display. It is all performed by the Orchestra, which features 125 musicians from major symphony orchestras, faculty from preeminent music schools and conservatories, and freelance artists. Some of the fifty locations where events occur in and around Rochester include performing arts facilities, community centers, libraries, art galleries, places of worship, homes for the elderly, shelters for the needy, and private homes.
