Galilee Chamber Orchestra Information
thIn 2012, the Galilee Chamber Orchestra was founded as the very first professional orchestra composed of both Jewish and Arab musicians in Israel. When it came into existence, the orchestra included only three Arab musicians. The orchestra now boasts equal numbers of both Arab and Jewish. The Galilee Chamber Orchestra enjoys an international reputation and performs six major concerts each year. The orchestra also gives many performances as part of Polyphony’s in-school music education program based in Alhan.
Zvi Karmeli is the conductor of the Galilee Chamber Orchestra, and conductor/pianist Saleem Ashkar leads it. The orchestra was created in the Galilee to develop an orchestral playing culture of bow instruments. The orchestra brings together musicians from all across Israel, including Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Nazareth. It also includes members of the Israeli Philharmonic as well as other professionals. It includes 15 of Polyphony’s most advanced Conservatory students, Conservatory graduates (between 17 and 26 years old), and Seminar participants.
This highly polished combination makes sure that a high level of performance is delivered to the audience and provides unique energy. The Galilee Orchestra’s impact successfully extends throughout Israeli society. Polyphony’s top-notch musicianship moves it along with a vision for Jewish and Arab equality, pianist Sir András Schiff to world-famous musicians from cellist Lynn Harrell has performed with the Orchestra in Israel.
The Galilee Chamber Orchestra went on its first European tour in the summer of 2019, which was a significant milestone. They also traveled to Germany to perform at the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Osnabrück Music Festival, the Christuskirche Hannover, and at the Rheingau Festival.
