The music of Gabriels unites the past, the present, and the future. In their debut EP, "Love and Hate in a Different Time," released this past June, the Los Angeles-based group captures the uncompromising realism of gospel and 60s R&B while presenting it in an exciting, modern context with finely orchestrated music and crisp electronic embellishments. Ryan Hope, a producer from Sunderland, Ari Balouzian, a classically trained musician from California, and Jacob Lusk, a gospel singer from Compton, have quickly amassed a legion of famous fans, including Annie Mac, Gilles Peterson, and Elton John. She called the title track from their debut EP "one of the most seminal records I've heard in the last ten. In other words, the window of opportunity to gain an early advantage on this band is rapidly closing.
NME recently chatted with the band as they prepared to release their second "Blame" EP on November 5. Topics included the EP's inception, the band's future live gigs, and the time Lusk spontaneously performed Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" during a Black Lives Matter march.
