Funkadesi Information
The different musical and cultural backgrounds of Funkadesi's nine core members inform the band's bold and unusual blend of Caribbean, East Indian, African, and funk. Valroy Dawkins, a singer/percussionist from Jamaica, and Radhika Chimata, a singer from India, usually take turns at the microphone. Their contrasting styles make up the ethereal core of the Funkadesi sound. Dawkins, who is well-versed in reggae, West African rhythm and dance, and West Indian folk dance, contribute true Afro-Caribbean flavor to the mix and writes most of the English lyrics.
Rahul Sharma, a Kenyan-American who plays bass, sitar, and guitar, leads the instrumental band supporting them. Sharma and Abdul Hakeem, who plays electric guitar, are seasoned performers who cut their teeth in the Chicago funk, blues, and reggae scenes. Meshach Silas, a drummer, djembe player, dholak player, and student of the music of Senegal, Guinea, and the Old Mali Empire, reveals their appreciation for funk and reggae.
Having a Puerto Rican conga musician like Carlos Antonio Cornier lends a Latin American flavor to the band's already diverse musical palette. Jazz saxophonist Kristin McGee is the last of the band's members, but her doctorate in ethnomusicology makes up for the fact that she is the sole member of European descent. The Chicago-based ensemble got together because its members were eager to perform Indian improvisations over reggae/funk beats. In a short time, they opened for bands like Los Lobos and Cracker and won two Chicago Music Awards for their contribution to global music. Their debut EP only bore their name. They released their first full-length album, Uncut Roots, in 2000.
