For Colored Girls - Play Information

Ntozake Shange's first and most celebrated work is for colored females who have considered suicide, premiered in 1976. Shange called it a choreopoem, and it's made up of a sequence of lyrical monologues set to music and dance. This book, "for colored girls," presents the lives of seven women who have been marginalized due to racism and sexism.

The piece is a sophisticated representation of sisterhood in the form of a choreopoem, consisting of a succession of 20 different poems performed to music. Seven African-American women, all of whom have been given color codes in lieu of names, make up the cast.

In a women's bar outside Berkeley, California, in December 1974, Shange and four other artists presented the first version of her choreopoem. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry was the first play by a black woman to be produced on Broadway; after moving to New York City, she kept working for colored girls..., which opened at the Booth Theatre in 1976. In 2010, Shange revised the choreopoem by adding a "positive" poem that alludes to the Iraq War and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

There have been Off-Broadway and Broadway productions for colored girls..., as well as a book (first published in 1976 by Shameless Hussy Press), a television film (1982), and a theatrical feature (2010). A Tony Award nomination for Best Play was submitted for the 1976 Broadway performance.
