The concept behind the movie was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg had created after his parents' divorce in 1960. The filming process took place on a budget of $10.5 million from September to December 1981. When the movie was released, it was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Jurassic Park previously held this record for 11 years.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was majorly acclaimed by critics. It was stated to be one of the greatest films of all time. The movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
