Escher String Quartet Information
The Escher String Quartet is a string quartet. The current lineup of the group consists of Brook Speltz (cello), Pierre Lapointe (viola), Aaron Boyd (violin), and Adam Barnett-Hart (violin). Originating with the work of a Dutch artist, M. C. Escher is the inspiration for the group's moniker. In 2005, four Manhattan School of Music students came together to form the Escher Quartet. The band performs worldwide, including in Europe, Australia, and China, and extensively tours in the United States.
The ensemble has played in prestigious concert halls such as the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Wigmore Hall in London. From 2010 through 2012, the trio participated in BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists program. Itzhak Perlman invited them to the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, New York, and Pinchas Zukerman asked them to be the Quartet in Residence at the Young Artists Programme at Canada's National Arts Centre. The trio was a Stony Brook University resident from 2007 to 2009.
Escher has worked with a wide variety of musicians, including the Emerson String Quartet (who served as his mentors), Leon Fleischer, David Finckel, Wu Han, Benjamin Grosvenor, jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, and jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman. The Escher Quartet won the Avery Fisher Career Grant from the Lincoln Center in 2013. Lincoln Center presented the foursome with the Martin. E. Segal Award in 2015.
