Erie Otters Information
The Erie Otters play in the Major Junior Ice Hockey League in Erie, Pennsylvania. They are one of just three American teams in the Ontario Hockey League's (OHL) Midwest division. Typical of Lake Erie, this North American river otter is the inspiration for the team's moniker. Previously known as the Niagara Falls Thunder, the Erie Otters were based in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This team's 1996–97 season was their first at Erie Insurance Arena.
The Erie Otters had their first-ever Martin Luther King Jr. Day game on January 17, 2022. When Alex Randall, a student at the University of Pittsburgh, became the first African American to call a game as a play-by-play announcer in either the Ontario Hockey League or the Canadian Hockey League, the club made history.
This trend persisted on January 16, 2023, when Trey Matthews, a student at Arizona State University, was the second African-American to call the game for television. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2023, the Erie Otters wore a warm-up jersey and logo inspired by Black History Month. As of January 26, 2023, Stan Butler will have been the team's tenth head coach. The London Knights defeated the Otters 5-1 in Butler's inaugural game as head coach.
