Ellis Paul (January 14, 1965) is an American folk musician, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Fort Kent, Maine. Paul is an important figure in the folk-pop movement of the 1990s, which he helped spark as part of the Boston School of Composition. This movement is characterized by a literate, provocative, and urbanely romantic style. His songs combine the contemporary folk sound with the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger and have been featured in film and television soundtracks.
Paul is a native of a small village in Maine. He received a full tuition track grant to Boston College, where he studied English. After suffering an injury as a junior, Paul took up the guitar to pass the time and quickly found himself composing original music. After graduating from college, Paul played at open mic nights in the Boston region and began working with at-risk youth. He decided to pursue music after winning a Boston Acoustic Underground songwriter competition and having his tune featured on a Windham Hill Records compilation.
By the end of 2014, Paul had published 19 albums and won 14 Boston Music Awards, widely regarded as representing the pinnacle of achievement in contemporary acoustic music. He has issued a DVD that features a live performance, guitar instruction, and a documentary about his road journey, in addition to a book of his original lyrics, poems, and drawings.
