Eddie Palmieri Information
Eddie Palmieri (December 15, 1936) is a Grammy Award-winning American musician, bandleader, pianist, and composer. He is recognized as the founder of the following bands; La Perfecta, Harlem River Drive, and La Perfecta II. Born in New York City, he received an education from the city’s public school system, where he was exposed to music. Palmieri used to take piano lessons, and at the age of 11, he performed at Carnegie Hall. His early influences were McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk.
Palmieri founded his first band in 1961 named “Conjunto La Perfecta.” The band featured singer, Ismael Quintana. He recorded “Vamonos Pa’l Monte” with his brother Charlie in 1971. The same year, he also recorded “Eddie Palmieri & Friends in Concert,” which was recorded at the University of Puerto Rico. Palmieri was awarded his first Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1975. He appeared at the Amandla Festival on July 21, 1979, along with Pattie LaBelle, Dick Gregory, Bob Marley, and many others.
Palmieri won two Grammys for his recordings of Solito and Palo Pa’ Rumba. In 1987, he recorded another notable album with a salsa singer, Tony Vega, entitled La Verdad. Palmieri has worked with many record labels since he has started his career, including Concord Picante, RMM< Tico, Alegre, Fania, and Ropeadope. Palmiere has released countless albums throughout his career, including Mi Luz Mayor (2018), Full Circle (2018), Sabiduria / Wisdom (2017), and Eddie Palmieri Is Doin’ It in the Park (2013).
