East Tennessee State Buccaneers Football Information
East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, hosts an American football team at the collegiate level. From the conclusion of the 2003 season until the beginning of the 2015 season, the club was inactive. Before the new William B. Greene Jr. Stadium was opened for the 2017 season, they played all of their home games in Kermit Tipton Stadium in 2015 and all but one of their home games in 2016.
Since Bristol Motor Speedway was already set up for football after the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech game the week before, the remaining 2016 home game, on September 17, was moved there. In the past, ETSU fielded a football team that participated in the Southern Conference (SoCon), now the NCAA Division I. Once the SoCon reinstated the team in 2016, the restored program played as an independent in 2015.
In 1920, the school of East Tennessee State Normal School put together its first football squad. The school's traditional colors of navy blue and old gold were selected in 1911. They only played five games, two of which were against high schools in their area. For the first two years, W.R. Windes led the team as a coach. The school became known as East Tennessee State Teachers College in 1925. The teachers' sports teams were known as "The Teachers." For the subsequent five years, John Robinson presided as head coach.
