Duncan Sheik Information
Duncan Sheik (November 18, 1969) is an American composer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Montclair, New Jersey. Sheik's grandmother had lessons at Juilliard and taught him to play the piano; he later picked up the guitar. At 12, he had already joined a band as a guitarist, performing covers with teenagers. Sheik attended Brown University to study semiotics following his 1988 graduation from Phillips Academy, Andover. He also formed a band at Brown featuring Lisa Loeb, a student there. He left for Los Angeles after graduating from Brown in 1992.
At the outset of his career, Sheik was a guitar player for other musicians like Liz and Lisa (with Elizabeth Mitchell and Lisa Loeb). Because of his friendship with Tracee Ellis Ross, a fellow Brown University alum, Sheik contributed to the 1993 album by His Boy Elroy. After the success of his 1996 self-titled first album, Sheik went on to earn a gold disc. Album highlight "Barely Breathing" peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 55 weeks there.
In 2001, Sheik and poet/writer Steven Sater produced Phantom Moon, an album heavily influenced by Nick Drake. Daylight, Sheik's follow-up album, was released the following year and featured the radio hits "On A High" and "Half-Life."
