Duke Ellington Orchestra Information

American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington (April 29, 1899–May 24, 1974) was born Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington. He led his namesake jazz orchestra from 1923 until his death. Although he was raised in the nation's capital, Ellington moved to New York in the mid-1920s, and it was via performances at Harlem's Cotton Club that his ensemble became known across the country. With almost a thousand compositions to his name, Ellington has the biggest documented personal jazz legacy, and many of his works have become standards. He was a master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format.

His bandmates' compositions, such as Juan Tizol's "Caravan," gave big band jazz a distinctive Spanish flavor, and he recorded several of them. Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, a composer, arranger, and pianist, worked together for nearly thirty years beginning at the tail end of the 1930s. He collaborated with Strayhorn on several suites and other lengthy compositions. For a few years before Strayhorn got involved, Ellington's group was most innovative when it included bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster.

Duke's son Mercer continued to lead the orchestra after his father's passing and did so until he, too, passed away in 1996. This "ghost band," much like the Count Basie Orchestra, kept recording and releasing CDs for quite some time. The Duke Ellington Orchestra's 1988 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album goes to their album Digital Duke.
