Doyle Lawson Information
Doyle Lawson (April 20, 1944) is a traditional Southern gospel and bluegrass musician and singer from Sullivan County, Tennessee. He grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights and heard mandolinist Bill Monroe, the "founding father" of bluegrass. Around 11, Lawson developed his interest in playing the mandolin, so his father borrowed one from Willis Byrd, a fellow musician and family friend. Lawson taught himself how to play the instrument, and later on, he learned to play the banjo and the guitar.
Lawson went to Nashville in 1963 to play the banjo with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. Soon he began playing with J.D. Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys. He has also played with The Country Gentlemen. Lawson formed a band named Doyle Lawson and Foxfire in 1979. The group's name was soon changed to Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and in 1981, it released the critically acclaimed album Rock My Soul. It was followed by a second gospel album, Heavenly Treasures.
Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver won song of the year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards in 1989 and 1997. Their song named "There's a Light Guiding Me" was a 39th Annual Grammy Award nominee. Later on, Lawson created many hit albums and songs with his band, such as There's a Light Guiding Me, The Hard Game of Love, and More Behind the Picture Than the Wall. Some of his compilation albums are A School of Bluegrass, Best of the Sugar Hill Years, and The Gospel Collection 1.
Doyle Lawson earned several awards and honors throughout his career, such as the 2012 Hall of Fame induction, 2011 Recorded Event of the Year, and 2006 Vocal Group of the Year.
