Dirty Dozen Brass Band Information
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a brass band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was established by Benny Jones along with the members of the Tornado Brass Band in 1977. The current lineup of the group includes Gregory Davis (trumpet and vocals), Roger Lewis (baritone, soprano sax, and vocals), Kevin Harris (tenor, saxophone, and vocals), Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), TJ Norris (trombone and vocals), Julian Addison (drums and vocals), and Takeshi Shimmura (guitar).
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band released its first official album entitled “My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now” in 1984, released on the Concord Jazz label. The band’s set was also recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. It was recorded as the Mardi Gras at Montreux on Rounder Records. Since its formation, the band has followed the traditional New Orleans brass band sound and has revolutionized the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating bebop and funk.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band has signed a record deal with several record labels, including Shout! Factory, Ropeadope Records, Mammoth, Columbia, Rounder, and Concord Jazz. The band has made a featured appearance on the 2005 benefit album entitled “A Celebration of New Orleans Music to Benefit MusiCares Hurricane Relief 2005.”
The Dirty Dozen has a large number of albums released, including Voodoo (1987), The New Orleans Album (1989), Open Up: Whatcha Gonna Do for the Rest of Your Life (1991), Ears to the Wall (1996), Back Jump (1999), Twenty Dozen (2012), and countless others.
