Dianne Reeves Information
Dianne Elizabeth Reeves (October 23, 1956) is an American jazz singer from Detroit, Michigan. She was born into a musical family where her father sang and played the trumpet. She started playing the piano and singing in 1971. Reeves was a member of her high school band and used to perform at a convention in Chicago. During her performance, she was noticed by trumpeter Clark Terry, who later invited her to sing along. Reever studied classical voice at the University of Colorado and then moved to Los Angeles, where she recorded and sang for Lenny White, Stanley Turrentine, and Billy Childs.
Reeves recorded with the band Caldera and later founded the band Night Flight with the help of Billy Childs. She toured with Harry Belafonte from 1983 to 1986. Her eponymous album came out in 1987 after signing with Blue Note. The album featured Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award with Reeves having, to date, won five Grammy Awards.
The sound by Reeves is compared to that of Vanessa Rubin, Anita Baker, Patti Austin, and Regina Bell. She performed in the closing ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and has appeared in the film Good Night, And Good Luck in 2005. She sang 1950s classics such as "How High the Moon," "I've Got My Eyes on You," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," "Too Close for Comfort," and "One for My Baby" in the film.
