Derrick Morgan Information
Derrick Morgan OD (March 27, 1940) is a famous Jamaican musician from the '60s and '70s born in Clarendon, Jamaica. In addition to performing skinhead reggae and rocksteady, he collaborated with ska artists Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, and Desmond Dekker. Morgan auditioned for the 1957 Vere Johns Opportunity Hour at Kingston's Palace Theatre. His energetic Little Richard imitation helped him win, and soon after, he was asked to tour the island with the famous Jamaican comic duo Bim and Bam.
"Conquering Ruler," "Do the Beng Beng," "Tougher Than Tough," and a rendition of Ben E. King's soul smash, "Seven Letters" were among Morgan's high-quality releases in the mid-1960s, when ska transformed into rocksteady. Often considered the pioneering reggae hit, "Seven Letters" was produced by Bunny Lee.
"Jamaica Whoa" (1998, Neville Martin), "Fi Wi Island A Boom" (2000), and "Progress" (2002) are just a few of Morgan's compositions that have taken home the Festival Song Contest trophy for other performers. Morgan took a break from music in the 2010s due to health issues, but he returned in 2016 to work with Kirk Diamond on a cover version of his song "Conqueror" from the 1960s. On May 27 and 28, 2017, Morgan was the featured performer at the Supernova International Ska Festival in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
