Derrick Carter Information
Derrick Carter (October 21, 1969) is an American musician, DJ, and record producer. He was born in Compton, California. As Symbols & Instruments, he and Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka put out an EP in 1988. The album may not have been a commercial smash but it impacted England's emerging ambient techno scene. This solidified Carter's position as a major player on the underground house scene on a global scale.
Since his prominence, Carter has avoided giving lengthy interviews and has kept a low profile. Ten years ago, he established a record company called Classic Recordings to shut it down after its one-hundredth release. While albums and compact discs begin at CMC100 and progress forward, 12" records do the opposite. Disco, soul, and jazz heavily influenced DJ sets by Carter from the 1970s, a pivotal decade for black music.
He's done remixes for various acts, from The Beloved and The Human League to Ricky Martin, Boris Dlugosch, Modjo, DJ Sneak, and Röyksopp. After taking some time off, he is actively producing and has remixed tracks by Rosie Brown and Truman Industries, among others. According to a free weekly newspaper Newcity poll in 2006 (which relied mostly on Google traffic), Carter ranked 53rd among the 100 Most Famous Chicagoans.
