Dennis Stroughmatt is an award-winning American educator, fiddler, and historian from southeastern Illinois. He was taught to play the fiddle by the famous Missouri Creole fiddlers Roy Boyer and Charlie Pashia. Stroughmatt became an adopted son of the French Midwest. As a result of his French studies in Louisiana and Quebec, Stroughmatt soon found himself in a unique position where he could speak knowledgeably and play in various French styles.
Dennis Stroughmatt is the founder of the Dennis Stroughmatt et l'Esprit Creole band, known for carrying the torch upon enduring Illinois's culture. Stroughmatt is also an instructor at Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, IL. He is famous for his innate sense that makes the audience get on their feet. Dennis Stroughmatt takes his listeners on a musical odyssey that is not different from his musical journeys.
His music is classified as a vibrant blend of Celtic and Canadian, along with an Old Time sound that bridges the gap between Louisiana Cajun styles and contemporary Canadian. Families preserve this type of music in the Ozark foothills, and it remains mostly intact to the traditions that have been passed down century after century.
Dennis Stroughmatt was inducted into the National Oldtime Fiddlers Hall of Fame. He earned Missouri Governor's Humanities Award and was a winner of the Center for Folk Studies Grant, Illinois Arts Tour Grant, a Missouri Humanities Speaker, and Illinois Humanities Speaker.
