Delbert McClinton Information
Delbert McClinton (November 4, 1940) is an American blues rock and electric blues pianist, singer-songwriter, harmonica player, and guitarist. He is originally from Lubbock, Texas but relocated with his family to Fort Worth at 11. At a young age, he worked in a bar band, the Straitjackets. McClinton recorded many regional singles before hitting the national chart in 1962. He played harmonica on “Hey! Baby” by Bruce Channel. While on a UK tour with Channel, McClinton instructed John Lennon on the finer points of playing blues harmonica.
McClinton, Ronnie Kelly, and Billy Wade Sanders formed the Ron-Dels, which is sometimes called the Rondells. “If You Really Want Me To I’ll Go” was released by the band and was a hit in 1965. The Jealous Kind was one of the initial solo albums by McClinton, released in 1980. The album included his a Top 40 hit single named “Giving It Up for Your Love.” Some of his other notable singles are Victim of Life’s Circumstances, Genuine Cowhide, Second Wind, Keeper of the Flame, Never Been Rocked Enough, One of the Fortunate Few, Blind, and Crippled and Crazy.
Delbert McClinton released some compilation albums such as The Best of Delbert McClinton, Great Songs: Come Together, Don’t Let Go: The Collection, and Genuine Rhythm & the Blues. In 1991, McClinton was awarded a Grammy Award for his duet with Bonnie Raitt, entitled “Good Man, Good Woman.” Etta James, on her 2003 album, even added two of his singles to Let’s Roll. McClinton was featured in a documentary by the filmmaker Jay Curlee named Rocking the Boat: A Musical Conversation and Journey.
