Del McCoury Information
Delano Floyd McCoury (February 1, 1939) is an American bluegrass musician and singer from York, Pennsylvania. His music is defined as old-time, country, and bluegrass. McCoury is the leader of the band Del McCoury Band, where he plays guitar and sings lead vocals. His two sons, Ronnie McCoury and Rob McCoury, also play in the band.
During the initial stages of his career, McCoury was hired as a banjo player for the group Blue Grass Boys by Bill Monroe in 1963. He also sang lead vocals and played rhythm guitar for the band. McCoury has appeared with the Golden State Boys and The String Cheese Incident, Ronnie McCoury, David Grisman, Steve Earle, and The Travelin' McCourys.
McCoury was honored to be one of those performers at The Clearwater Concert on May 3, 2009, when the event took place at Madison Square Garden to celebrate the 90th birthday of Pete Seeger. He has successfully influenced a significant number of bands, including Phish. Del McCoury initiated an annual bluegrass festival in Cumberland, Maryland, by the name DelFest which began in 2008 and is held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.
He earned a National Heritage Fellowship lifetime achievement award in June 2010 from the National Endowment for the Arts. The following year, McCoury was elected into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.
McCoury released the following solo albums; 1968: Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass, 1971: Livin' on the Mountain, 1971: Collector's Special, 1974: Our Kind of Grass, and 1988: Don't Stop The Music. He has won over 30 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards and was awarded his first Grammy Award in 2006.
