Dee Dee Bridgewater Information
Dee Dee Bridgewater (May 27, 1950) is an American jazz actress and singer born in Memphis, Tennessee. Singing in Michigan clubs, she joined a rock and R&B group when she was sixteen. Before transferring to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she attended Michigan State University when she was eighteen. She traveled around the Soviet Union in 1969 with the jazz band from her school. After meeting trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater the following year, she wed him and the couple relocated to New York, where Cecil was a member of Horace Silver's band.
In her role as Goodwill Ambassador to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Bridgewater maintains her call for worldwide unity to fund grassroots initiatives to end world hunger. Bridgewater actively seeks opportunities to mentor and support emerging musicians; she has received honorary doctorates from both Berklee College of Music and the University of Michigan.
Thelonious Monk/Hancock Institute of Jazz presented Bridgewater with the 2018 Maria Fisher Founder's Award in 2018, and in April 2017, she received an NEA Jazz Masters Award at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She is presently on a globe tour in promotion of her most recent album, Memphis.... Yeah, I'm Ready.
