James Darrell Scott (August 6, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from London, Kentucky. He is also known as Darrell Scott, and his music is defined as country. Scott’s father is musician Wayne Scott. As a child, he moved to East Gary, Indiana, and by his teens, Scott was already playing professionally in Southern California. Later on, he relocated to Toronto, then Boston, and attended Tufts University, where he studied literature and poetry.
Darrell Scott has written many mainstream country hits and successfully established himself as one of Nashville’s premier session instrumentalists. Scott has also collaborated with many well-known personalities, including John Cowan, Verlon Thompson, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Sam Bush, Emmylou Harris, Kate Rusby, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Dan Tyminski. Crooked Road was one of the hit albums by Scott, released on May 25, 2010.
Some other notable studio albums include Long Ride Home, Live: We’re Usually a Lot Better Than This, Memories and Moments, Ten: Songs of Ben Bullington, Couchville Sessions, and Sings the Blues of Hank Williams. Many of Scott’s songs were covered by other musicians, such as “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive,” “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive,” “Long Time Gone,” “We’ve Got Nothing But Love to Prove,” “Out In The Parking Lot,” “Head South,” and “Love’s Not Through With Me Yet.”
Darrell Scott won the Song of the Year award from the Americana Music Association in 2007 for his song “Hank William’s Ghost.” His album entitled A Crooked Road also won the Country Album award from The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards in January 2011.
