Darlene Wright (July 26, 1941) is an American singer and actress born in Los Angeles, California. She is better known by her stage name, Darlene Love. Love grew up listening to gospel music and was a dedicated member of her church. At ten, she began singing with her local church choir in Hawthorne, California. Love caught the attention of choir director Cora Martin-Moore while she was practicing. Moore signed her and asked Love to visit the Music Mart, where she did some broadcasts and singing.
Darlene Love began her official career while she was still in high school. She sang with the Echoes, a doo-wop group. Soon she got an invitation to join a girl group, the Blossoms. The band was hired in 1962 to sing in a session by producer Phil Spector. In 1963, Love recorded the track entitled “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” for a holiday compilation. The album was named A Christmas Gift For You by Phil Spector.
Love began her acting career in the late 1980s and early 1990s, playing the character of Danny Glover’s wife in the four Lethal Weapon movies. Some of her other film appearances include Change of Habit (1969), The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020), Holiday Rush (2019), New Girl (2016), and 20 Feet from Stardom (2013).
Love’s notable solo albums as a successful singer include Introducing Darlene Love (2015), The Sound of Love: The Very Best of Darlene Love (2011), and So Much Love: A Darlene Love Anthology (2008).
