Crystal Gayle was given the birth name Brenda Gail Webb (January 9, 1951). She is an American country music singer and songwriter from Paintsville, Kentucky, with her music being defined as country-pop, folk, gospel, jazz, and country. Webb had an interest in singing from a young age. In 2018, she stated that she could sing before she could even walk. Webb grew up in an urban environment in Wabash, where she used to sing the songs she heard on the radio. Webb was inspired by the music of her sister Loretta Lynn. In her teenage years, her musical interest got stronger, and Webb began singing in church. She used to perform folk songs and recorded demonstration tapes.
After getting enough encouragement from her sister Lynn, Webb began touring during summers in high school. She performed on the Grand Ole Opry as a replacement for her sister when she was 16. In 1969, Webb graduated from high school and signed her first recording contract with her sister's label: Decca Records. During her time with Decca, Webb insisted on changing her first name. The conflict arose because of Brenda Lee, who was already signed to Decca at the time; hence Webb changed her name to "Crystal Gayle."
