Cosmic Charlie was born in Athens, Georgia, a musical mecca. The band is actively cementing its reputation since its inception in the summer of 1999. As a band, Cosmic Charlie puts a unique and personal twist on the Grateful Dead catalog. They are a Dead cover band for folks that are also ambivalent about Dead cover bands. The group does not exactly mimic the Dead; instead, the band taps into the style and energy of the Dead for a foundation. The outcome of this is a healthy balance of creativity and tradition.
Cosmic Charlie plays with ultimate energy that eludes other bands, an energy that often eluded the Dead themselves. The band has performed over 800 shows at theatres, festivals, and clubs across the continental United States. They have also performed in Oregon to Colorado and Ohio to the Carolinas. Cosmic Charlie has been joined by many other musicians on stage, including Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick, Ratdog/Other One's guitarist Mark Karan, Grateful Dead archivist/radio guru David Gans, Ratdog bass player Robin Sylvester, and Grateful Dead Keyboardist Tom Constanten.
Cosmic Charlie has versatile members who appear on the stage for the performance. The band regularly appears at the top venues such as Variety Playhouse, Georgia Theatre, Lincoln Theatre, and The Orange Peel.
