The Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo, held annually in Mitchell, SD, since 1971, has become a symbol of South Dakota culture due to its innovative combination of classic rodeo events with modern-day activities. Across 12,000 rodeo fans from all across the United States attend the four-day yearly event sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
The Stampede at the Corn Palace. The Corn Palace is where the rodeo was first held. The original Corn Palace (then known as "The Corn Belt Exposition") was constructed in 1892 to showcase the richness of South Dakota's land. It featured a painting depicting a harvest from local farms. The murals represent various aspects of life in South Dakota.
Corn, grain, grasses, wild oats, brome grass, blue grass, rye, straw, and wheat, by the hundreds of bushels, are needed annually to complete these paintings. All of the outside decorations are removed and replaced with brand-new murals each year. The Corn Palace is a regional and communal hub that hosts various events, from concerts to sporting competitions, in its arena. The "World's Only Corn Palace" was built to symbolize South Dakota's rich agricultural history.
