One professional ice hockey team hailing from Columbus, Georgia, is the Columbus River Dragons. You can catch these Federal Prospects Hockey League games at the Columbus Civic Center. After 21 years as a Civic Center tenant, the Columbus Cottonmouths dissolved in 2017. As a result, the Civic Center had never before been without a hockey tenant. After nearly two years, in April 2019, the Columbus City Council granted Ignite Pro Hockey, LLC a five-year lease at the Civic Center.
The four teams that made up the 2020–21 season—the Carolina Thunderbirds, Columbus River Dragons, Elmira Enforcers, and Port Huron Prowlers—postponed their seasons until February 19th due to the ongoing epidemic. The Thunderbirds played all of their games on the road. The league has announced an end-of-season event, although because of the unconventional style of the season, it will be dubbed the Ignite Cup instead of the Commissioner's Cup.
The two best teams from the regular season, each having played at least 16 games, meet in a five-game series for the Ignite Cup. For the league title, Columbus defeated second-seeded Elmira Enforcers three games to one in the Ignite Cup after finishing with the best regular season record.
