Coco is based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, who is also the director, whereas Adrian Molina is the co-director. The voice cast stars of Coco include Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Benjamin Bratt, and Edward James Olmos. Molina and Matthew Aldrich scripted the film.
The actual concept behind Coco is inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead. It is the first film that had a nine-figure budget to feature an all-Latino principal cast. The cost of the film was $175 million. Coco premiered during the Morelia International Film Festival on October 20, 2017, in Mexico. It was highly praised for animation, voice acting, respect for Mexican culture, and music.
Coco grossed over $807 million worldwide and became the 16th highest-grossing animated film ever when it was released. The National Board of Review selected the film as the Best Animated Film of the year 2017. It also won two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"). Coco is also chosen as the Best Animated Film at the BAFTA Awards, Critic's Choice Movie Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Annie Awards.
