Cimafunk Information
Erik Alejandro Iglesias Rodriguez a.k.a Cimafunk (1989) is a Cuban musician. He was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. As a kid, Rodriguez sang in the church choir, and he wanted to go into medicine like many of his relatives. He spent two years studying medicine in his native Pinar del Ro before relocating to Havana to focus on music. Between 2014 and 2016, he was a member of the band Interactivo and a session arranger and producer for Cuban musicians like Ral Paz and Liuba Mara Hevia.
When he quit the group, he took the name Cimafunk in honor of the cimarróns, a group of formerly enslaved people who established independent settlements in Cuba during the colonial era. He has a revolving cast of musicians in his band, Cimafunk. Cimafunk set out to fuse Afro-Cuban and African American music, emphasizing funk rhythms. Since then, he's been compared to James Brown in the New Yorker.
Cimafunk published their debut album, Terapia, independently in 2017 and their first single, "Me Voy," in 2018. One of Billboard's "10 Latin Artists to Watch in 2019" highlighted him. Cimafunk returned to Cuba in 2019, having finished a highly successful tour of the United States and Europe.
