Chris Hillman Information
Christopher “Chris” Hillman (December 4, 1944) is an American musician who was the original bassist and an original member of The Byrds. He was born in Los Angeles, California, and, according to him, Hillman’s older sister excited his interest in folk and country music. His first guitar was bought by his mother, who also encouraged him to think seriously about his music interest. Hillman finally developed his interest in bluegrass music after listening and observing music of different genres, particularly the mandolin.
Hillman went to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to see the Kentucky Colonels bluegrass band presented at the Ash Grove. Hillman became known in San Diego’s folk music community as a solid player and played in many bands, including Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, the Hillmen, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, McGuinn, and Clark & Hillman. He has collaborated with Ever Call Ready, Down Home Praise, and Roger McGuinn.
Hillman has worked with a few record labels since starting his career, including Columbia Records, Sugar Hill Records, Asylum Records, A&M Records, and Rounder Records. He has done several notable solo recordings as well, including Slippin’ Away (1976), Clear Sailin’ (1977), Morning Sky (1982), Desert Rose (1984), Like a Hurricane (1998), The Other Side (June 21, 2005), and Bidin’ My Time (September 22, 2017). A few notable singles are “Love Is The Sweetest Amnesty,” “Step On Out,” and “Take It On the Run.”
