The show follows the group of Allen’s students as they prepare for her unique annual ballet showcase. The ballet is produced through Los Angeles-based Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which is abbreviated as DADA. Oliver Bokelberg directed Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, a documentary about the event streaming on Netflix. The documentary follows Allen and her students, staff, and extended family as they prepare for the beloved local event.
Hot Chocolate Nutcracker is a culturally-inclusive take on “The Nutcracker,” directed and written by Allen. It is the academy’s biggest holiday extravaganza fundraiser. Allen decided to give the original 1892 “Nutcracker” her own fresh and multicultural spin. She incorporates hip-hop, jazz, and Latin American music into the show. Hot Chocolate Nutcracker looks at the founder’s vision of the history behind her L.A. school and, of course, classical ballet.
Allen debuted Hot Chocolate Nutcracker at UCLA’s Royce Hall in 2009. They perform a ballet mix, jazz, tap, hip-hop, flamenco, modern, and Bollywood dance.
