Chip Taylor Information
Chip Taylor (March 21, 1940) is an American songwriter. He was born in Yonkers, New York. Taylor co-wrote numerous pop and rock songs with Al Gorgoni and wrote them independently. Billy Vera, Ted Daryll, and Jerry Ragovoy worked as employees and independent contractors for a music publisher in New York City. Taylor's first significant hit was "Wild Thing," which was initially released in 1965 by Jordan Christopher & the Wild Ones but later gained notoriety as a 1966 Troggs smash single as well as a 1967 live performance by Jimi Hendrix. The Runaways, the Muppets, and X also covered the song.
"Angel of the Morning," the second most well-known song by Taylor, was originally recorded by Evie Sands in 1967. It became a hit for Merrilee Rush and P. P. Arnold in 1968, a million-selling single for country-pop singer Juice Newton in 1981, and was later covered by Chrissie Hynde.
The King label and its offshoot DeLuxe distributed Taylor's initial releases. He and the Town Three put out two 45s on DeLuxe in 1958, bearing the catalog numbers 6176 for "Midnight Blues" and 6180 for "I Want a Lover." He made his final recordings as Wes Voight for King in 1959 on King 5231 "I'm Ready to Go Steady" and "The Wind and the Cold Black Night" as well as King 5211 "I'm Loving It."
