Cecile McLorin Salvant Information
Cécile McLorin Salvant (August 28, 1989) is an American jazz vocalist from Miami, Florida. Salvant began studying classical piano when she was five years old and started singing in the Miami Choral Society at the age of eight. Ultimately, she developed an interest in utilizing a classical voice and began studying with private instructors. Salvant also studied with Edward Walker, who was a vocal teacher at the University of Miami. In 2007, she shifted to Aix-en-Provence, France, to study law along with classical and baroque voice at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory.
In 2007, while she was studying at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory, Salvant started her transition into jazz. She has stated that her primary jazz influence is Sarah Vaughan, as she has many childhood memories of listening to her songs. She also cited Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Betty Carter as other influences. She enjoys major popularity in Europe and the US by performing in concert halls, clubs, and festivals. She has performed at many jazz venues and festivals, including the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, Village Vanguard, and many more.
Cécile & the Jean-François Bonnel Paris Quintet is the first self-titled album by Salvant released in 2010. At the age of 21, she went on to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition as a vocalist. Some of her other notable discographies include WomanChild (Mack Avenue Records, 2013), For One to Love (Mack Avenue, 2015), The Window (Mack Avenue, 2018), and a few more.
Cécile McLorin Salvant earned a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album 2019, Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album 2018, and Paul Acket Award 2016.
