Cecilia Veronica “CeCe” Peniston (September 6, 1969) is a singer born in Dayton, Ohio, but spent most of her formative life in Phoenix. At first, Peniston began singing at church and performed plays and musicals in sixth grade. Peniston also participated in local singing talent shows and karaoke contests while also taking piano lessons. Peniston attended Trevor G. Browne High School in Phoenix, where she landed a part in a local theater group’s production of “Bubblin’ Brown Sugar.”
Peniston had already started writing lyrics while she was still at school. She wrote an internationally hit song entitled “Finally.” The song’s lyrics came to her while thinking about dating during a chemistry class. Peniston officially began her career in January 1991 when Felipe “DJ Wax Dawg” Delgado, her friend and a record producer in Phoenix, asked Peniston to record back-up vocals for Tony Davis.
Peniston’s debut single “Finally” was released in 1991 when she was only 21 years old. The single was a hit and became an instant dance anthem. It peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play for nearly two weeks. In 1991, Peniston released her debut album with Overweight Pooch entitled “Female Preacher.” Her other notable studio albums include Good News in Hard Times (1995), Desert Funk! (1998), Color of My Soul (2003) and Music Is Our Way of Life (2007).
