Caroline Spence, a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, rose to prominence in the mid-2010s thanks to her introspective songs on the human condition. After the success of her 2017 album Spades & Roses, for which she received widespread critical acclaim, she signed with Rounder and released her label debut, Mint Condition, in 2019. After waiting three years, Spence finally released the airy and introspective True North.
Spence, a resident of Charlottesville, Virginia, released his debut EP, You Know the Feeling, in 2013. The EP had six songs that Spence had written and featured his brand of dreamy, world-weary Americana and folk music. In 2013, before releasing her critically lauded debut album Somehow, she won the American Songwriter's Lyric Contest. She began making a name for herself on the national festival and folk club circuit.
Spence, who makes her home in Nashville, has been compared to Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris for her transparent, introspective songwriting that blurs the boundaries between folk, country, and roots music. In 2017, she released Spades & Roses, a haunting follow-up album, and soon after, she signed with the prestigious Rounder Records label. Her debut release for the company, 2019's Mint Condition, includes a performance by Emmylou Harris. Spence's True North, an ambient, almost ethereal folk album released in 2022, finds him contemplating loss, hope, and perseverance.
