Carnival of the Animals Information
The Carnival of the Animals is a fourteen-movement symphonic suite by French composer Camille Saint-Saens. The work, which lasts around 25 minutes, was written for private performance by two pianos and a chamber group; Saint-Saens forbade the work's public performance during his lifetime, believing that its frivolity would harm his reputation as a serious composer. The suite was published the year following his death, in 1922. The composition was well-received at a public performance the following year, and it has remained one of his most popular. The suite is frequently played with a full orchestral complement of strings, in addition to the original chamber ensemble version.
The suite features two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute (and piccolo), clarinet (C and B?), glass harmonica, and xylophone. Each of the fourteen movements represents a different animal. The work is both programmatic and zoological, as the title suggests. It moves from the first movement, Introduction et marche royale du lion, to portraits of elephants and donkeys ("Personages with Long Ears") before returning to many of the earlier elements in the finale.
Ogden Nash produced a set of funny poems to accompany each movement for a Columbia Masterworks recording of Carnival of the Animals led by Andre Kostelanetz in 1949. Nol Coward recited them, and in 1956, Kostelanetz and Coward played the suite with Nash's verses with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in New York.
