Canadian Country Music Association Awards Information
The Country Music Association Awards, or CMA Awards, are one of the major award associations in the US. Often known as CMAs, the awards are given to country music acts and broadcasters to honor their work in the music industry. Popular country musicians, as well as pop and rock acts on occasion, perform and present awards at the yearly televised celebration. The inaugural CMA Awards ceremony occurred in 1967, while the first broadcast ceremony occurred the following year.
In 1967, Eddy Arnold was honored as the first-ever CMA Entertainer of the Year in a non-televised event. It took place at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. In October 1968, the Country Music Association held its second annual awards presentation, which was recorded and broadcast by NBC a few weeks later.
Since then, the awards have been broadcast live on television every year around October or November. The broadcast took place under the following: NBC (1969–1971), CBS (1972–2005), and ABC (2006). Grand Ole Opry shows have been hosted in Nashville's Ryman Auditorium (beginning in 1968) and the Grand Ole Opry House (1974–2004).
Country music's biggest stars, including Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and Johnny Cash, have all performed at the award event celebrating the genre. The Country Music Association renewed its agreement to air CMA performances on ABC through 2026 in June 2021.
