California Rodeo Information
The California Rodeo got its start during the Spanish rancheros' time. Various herds of semi-wild cattle might include animals from different owners, each marking their animal with a distinctive brand. There were roundups, or "orders" in Spanish, in autumn and spring. The owners' goal was to locate and gather as many animals as possible, typically in a valley.
Branding, ear-marking, and castration were the goals of the spring roundup. The harvest season for hides and tallow began in the autumn. A social gathering was another function of these activities. Barbecues, fandangos, and roping and bronco riding contests were commonplace at these events, which may continue for a week or more. After a year at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, Washington, the PRCA's September ProRodeo Tour Finale shifted to the California Rodeo Salinas in 2021.
The PRCA ProRodeo Tour became the Playoff Series in 2022. As per the normal schedule, the California Rodeo Salinas was held in July as part of the tour, and in September, the final stop was Puyallup, Washington. Nevertheless, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, replaced other locations as the site of the Playoff Series finale beginning in 2023.
