BYU Vocal Point Information
Vocal Point was established by then-BYU students Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander in 1991. On a trip to the Eastern United States, Boyce and Ahlander were first exposed to modern a capella. The ensemble recruited Jill Petersen-Lex as its first Artistic Director to introduce modern capella to the Western United States. In the autumn of 1991, the three performed tryouts.
The original plan for the ensemble was to have eight members (a double quartet), but they ended up accepting two additional singers when they couldn't decide between them. "If Rocks Could Sing" was the group's debut cassette album, produced in 1992. Vocal Point merged with BYU's music department in 1994. Despite having won the ICCA semi-finals in both the 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons, the group opted out of competing in the finals in New York on Sundays.
2004 Vocal Point performed eighteen at the Joseph Smith Academy Theater in Nauvoo, Illinois. In 2004, James Stevens took over as the organization's leader and stayed in that role until 2012. In 2006, Vocal Point's CD "Standing Room Only" won three Pearl Awards from the Faith Centered Music Association: "Best Sacred Recorded Song of the Year," "Best Group Recording Artist of the Year," and "Best Performing Artist of the Year."
