Budapest Festival Orchestra Information
The Budapest Festival Orchestra was founded to provide Budapest with a new symphony orchestra of worldwide stature and make the orchestra's concerts become major events in Hungary's musical life. Under the auspices of the Budapest Municipality and the new BFO Foundation, created by fifteen Hungarian and multinational firms and banks, the ensemble worked for a full season from 1992 to 2000.
In addition to their main orchestral concerts, the orchestra has launched regular chamber music and chamber orchestra programs. The "Open Dress Rehearsals" with Iván Fischer's, the Sunday afternoon chamber music events, the "Cocoa Concerts" for young children, and the Haydn-Mozart series, where soloists of the concertos are members of the orchestra, have quickly become favorites of the Budapest music audience.
Gramophone magazine ranked the BFO as the world's ninth-best orchestra in their 2008 November issue. The BFO orchestra took up Gramophone's Orchestra of the Year prize in 2022. Music Director Iván Fischer has worked with the BFO since its inception.
