To fulfill their vision of establishing a music festival in southern Portland conductor John Trudeau and his buddy Sam McKinney traveled there. Peter Britt's hilltop house in early Jacksonville was ideal. Since they were musicians, they recognized that the hillside had incredible acoustic resonance. They thought the hillside would make a great performance venue due to its proximity to the valley and beautiful scenery.
The summer of 1963 saw the construction of a plywood stage with tin-can lighting by a group of volunteers. Assembling a small chamber orchestra, the first summer outdoor music festival in the Pacific Northwest was created. On August 11, 1963, the first concert took place. Britt only presented classical music until the new pavilion was built in 1978. The new building allowed for the establishment of the present multidisciplinary structure. In 1987, bench seating was installed, and in 1993, handicapped parking and facilities were provided.
Britt expanded its offerings in 2014 with the Performance Garden, a second stage perfect for pre-concert music and discussions, kid-friendly concerts, and other special events. During renovations to the concessions facility in 2017, three specialized commercial kitchens were installed, allowing Britt to serve delicious food from area eateries. Britt expanded and replaced the old bench seating in 2018 so that there are now 962 reserved seats available.
