Owens is part of a select group of artists that successfully combine traditional training with modern subject matter. The subset of them who have been awarded public and private grants, scholarships, and commissions is even more exclusive. And much more rare are the sculptor-painters who work in both mediums. Owens has taken a circuitous route into the world of art and the continent of his spirit, moving from Michigan to Florida and becoming a sculptor.
His mother, Katherine J. Owens, was a teacher, and his father, Carl C. Owens, was a freelance illustrator and Staff Artist for the Detroit Board of Education when he was born in 1958 in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised in a nice, middle-class area on Detroit's west side. As a self-employed artist, Carl C. Owens was among the first African Americans to secure direct contracts with major American companies like Ford Motor Company. Owens conducted his first "2 man" display at a fine art gallery in Detroit when he was just 16 years old, with the help of his father.
As an adult, he decided to pursue engineering instead of art. There was a long delay before the need to do art emerged again. In 1981, Owens took a job with a computer firm in Florida and moved there. He returned to the art world by working in "studio foundries" with established sculptors, where he acquired bronze casting techniques and had access to non-credit workshops and studio time.
