Barton Davies (banjo), Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass), Sam McCullough (drums), Willard Logan (mandolin, acoustic/electric guitar), and William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica) have been the band members since high school. William and Willard formed a garage rock band in middle school, but it wasn't until William met Barton in high school English class that the band Boy Named Banjo took shape.
Barton was first exposed to bluegrass music when he overheard William playing the banjo. They asked Willard to join them when he proposed they jam together. Outside the renowned Robert's Western World, the guys began playing music on the streets of downtown Nashville. Hence the moniker "Boy Named Banjo." A passerby heard Barton's performance and shouted encouragement: "Play that banjo, youngster!" William thought up the immortal moniker "Boy Named Banjo" later that night.
