Branford Marsalis Information
Branford Marsalis (August 26, 1960) is a composer, saxophonist, and bandleader from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. His music genre can be defined as jazz. Marsalis is the son of Dolores (née Ferdinand), a jazz singer and substitute teacher, and his mother is Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. All of his brothers Wynton Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, and Delfeayo Marsalis are also jazz musicians. He attended Berklee College of Music, and during that time, he toured Europe playing alto and baritone saxophone in a large ensemble, led by drummer Art Blakey.
Marsalis also has plenty of band experience, for example, stints with Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry. By the end of 1981, Marsalis joined his brother Wynton in Blakey's Jazz Messengers on alto saxophone. He performed in many events with his brother, such as the 1981 Japanese tour with Herbie Hancock, which resulted in the formation of his brother Wynton's first quintet. Scenes in the City was the very first recording by Marsalis. The Dream of the Blue Turtles was his first solo project in 1985 in which he joined Sting, singer, and bassist of the rock band, the Police.
Marsalis formed the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1986 along with drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts pianist Kirkland, and bass player Robert Hurst. They released the album Royal Garden Blues in that same year. I Heard You Twice the First Time (1992) was the last album by the quartet, but it won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group. Some of his other notable discographies as a leader include 1990 Crazy People Music, 1991 Herve Sellin Sextet/Brandford Marsalis, 1994 Buckshot LeFonque, 1999 Requiem, 2014 In My Solitude: Live at Grace Cathedral, and 2019 The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul.
Marsalis earned awards throughout his career, including a Grammy Award in 2001, an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music, 2010 Drama Desk Award, 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award, and many more.
