Bob Sumner is most known in the comedy world for being one of the creators of HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam. The Roselle, New Jersey native has more than 25 years of expertise and has identified some of the most talented comedians to grace stages and big screens worldwide. Before joining Rush Communications, Sumner worked as a freelance club promoter for comedians and artists in the tri-state region. His Friday Night Jam show, Mellow Madness, on SHU's FM station WSOU was as well-liked in its time slot as the top radio programs in the tri-state region while he was a student there.
Def Jam Recordings hired Sumner in 1989, and in 1992, he co-founded HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" with Hollywood heavyweights Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan. This program forever altered the face of urban comedy. Bill Bellamy, Sheryl Underwood, Chris Tucker, Mike Epps, Dave Chappelle, and the late great Bernie Mac are well-known comedians he has helped turn into stars. The most recent executive production was "Laff Mobb's We Got Next" on Magic Johnson's Aspire network. Sumner is also an executive partner in his company Laff Mobb, which has produced specials on Showtime. He is the Curator of Comedy at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. He has produced notable comedic events like the Soul Train Music Cruise, the Newark International Film Festival, Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning's "Zo's Comedy Groove" charity event, and the American Black Film Festival's HBO Comedy Wings competition. The Tru television network is now airing his brand-new television program, Laff Mobb's "Laff Tracks."
