Blossom Festival Orchestra Information
The Blossom Festival is a music festival featuring orchestral music. The festival is located at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. It was created to provide a summer concert vehicle for the Blossom Music Center, the Cleveland Orchestra. The Blossom Music Center was specially built to host the festival. The first season for the festival took place in 1968. It consisted of six weeks of concerts given by the Cleveland Orchestra that were flawlessly intermingled with eight individual jazz/folk music concerts.
George Szell conducted the first concert of The Blossom Festival on July 19, 1968. Since then, the majority part of the festival is still performed by the Cleveland Orchestra. On the other hand, it also includes concerts by the festival's own Blossom Festival Orchestra. The orchestra is made up of free-lance musicians that are from the Cleveland area. Most musicians are from Opera Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, or Apollo's Fire. The opera performed annually for the Blossom Festival and often appears when the Cleveland Orchestra has other summer performance engagements.
The Blossom Festival made history on July 28, 2007, by premiering the first live concert performance of Hoctor's Ballet. It was one of the last orchestral works by Gershwin.
