Black Opry Revue Information
Black artists, fans, and business insiders involved in the country, Americana, blues, and folk music call Black Opry home. Black people have created and embraced country and roots music from its inception. They have been overlooked in the genre for a long time, and Black Opry is altering that.
Black Americana performers striving to reclaim their place in the American musical canon are recognized and amplified by WXPN's Black Opry Residency. Traditional roots music genres like country, bluegrass, folk, blues, gospel, alternative country, and singer-songwriter are all included under the umbrella term "Americana."
Five Black Americana musicians will co-create project activities with reputable experts in the field through a seven-month, artist-centered project with a weeklong Creative Residency at its core. They will also be given the time and resources to concentrate on creative exploration, collaboration, audience engagement, and artist development.
At WXPN in Philadelphia, the Creative Residency week features artist interviews, songwriting and recording, and a culminating public performance. The residency will take on a second life through a following podcast project and performance videos that will share the stories of these artists and their experiences with a larger audience.
